  1. Hi Tiana,

It's Leslie here, reading your blog from my home in Canada as a member of the Summer Learning Journey. I'm so glad that you've chosen to be a part of this program this summer. Good for you!

You have 3 good ideas here about how to live carefully on the earth. Plastic is certainly a big problem that we human beings have created, isn't it? I'm glad that you have ideas about reducing the amount of plastic we use.

Are there any other things you can think of that would help people reduced their impact on the health of the earth? I try to walk as much as I can when I have errands to do, rather than drive in a car. I don't like burning fossil fuels! I live in a small town so it's easy for me to do my errands on foot. I realize that some people live too far from stores or from their workplaces to be able to walk to them. But if we walk or bike whenever we can, it will help.

We can also try growing our own food, can't we, so that don't rely on food that's shipped to us from far away. Again, this is a way to reduce the amount of fossil fuel used on hour behalf.

I hope you feel you're learning interesting and helpful things through this blogging program. I'm enjoying reading your blog. Keep up your great work!!

    Cheers,

    Leslie

  2. Hi Tiana,

Leslie here again, commenting on your poster about 3 animals supported by the World Wildlife Fund.

You've chosen three beautiful members of the cat family, as you say. They're all powerful, fast animals aren't they?

Have you ever been to the Auckland Zoo to see them in their habitats there? I visited the zoo last year with my daughter and her family. I was very impressed by the tiger and the lions. I'm not sure whether or not there's a cheetah at the zoo. I'll have to look back at my photos.

Do you have a cat in your family? You seem to be a cat lover!!

I hope you're enjoying learning about the organizations, like the World Wildlife Fund, which try to raise funds to work on behalf of all of these animals in danger of extinction. I am.

I'll continue to enjoy reading your blog!!

    Cheers,

    Leslie

  3. Hi Tiana,

Leslie here, responding to your last activity. Wow - good for you, you've made it right to the end of the Summer Learning Journey program!!!!! Amazing!! A great effort on your part.

Your final activity posting shows that you've learned some really important things through this program. Well done!!

Hopefully we'll all make the best choices we can in the future so that we, as humans, don't have a negative impact on the world around us. If we can stop using plastic, if we can be thoughtful before we cut down trees or fish in areas that have been over-fished, then we'll be doing a good thing.

It's been a real pleasure to read your blog, Tiana!!! I hope you're very pleased with all that you've accomplished.

    Cheers,

    Leslie

  4. Mōrena Tiana,

My name is Megan and like Sophie, I am a Summer Learning Journey cluster manager. Leslie and I work with the Tamariki in the Ako Hiko cluster, which is also here in Auckland.

First of all, congratulations on completing the Summer Learning Journey. What an incredible accomplishment that is to finish all 60 activities. We all know that it takes a lot of time and energy to read and answer so many. I hope you have still found time to energy the beautiful sunshine outside. Ka pai, Tiana!

Second of all, what an incredible post you have put together to end your journey. It looks like you have learnt a lot throughout the last 6 weeks. I think you have identified a great first step that your family could take to help our environment. My family has attempted to stop using plastic bags. So when we go shopping, we take canvas shopping bags. I am proud of the efforts my family has been making but it is still not enough.

Once again, well done Tiana. I hope you are proud of your achievement, I am sure Sophie and the Manaiakalani team are very proud of you.

    Nga mihi,
    Megan :)

  5. Hi Tiana, Great job on completing this activity! Any of those big cats would be hard to manage, and lions eat a lot of meat when they are older. I was also surprised by what the Australian government is doing to help save the Great Barrier Reef. Did you know that vinegar is poisonous to the starfish that are eating the reef, and scientists are using drones to inject them with vinegar to help save the reef?

  6. Kia Ora Tiana,

My name is Rachel and I am working with the Summer Learning Journey team this year. I can see that you have already had a number of people congratulating you on the awesome work that you have done, including my mom (Leslie)! I asked her to join us this year as she is a former teacher from Canada who loves to learn new things and to read great work. I know that she really enjoyed reading your posts! I, too, have really enjoyed them and marveled at how well you have done. It's wonderful to have you back again this year and to have the chance to share in your learning about the environment here in New Zealand and overseas. I hope that you will get the chance to share this awesome learning with your teachers, friends and peers at Glen Taylor when you head back to school.

Hope to see you very soon at the SLJ prizegiving assembly!

    Bye for now,

    Rachel :)
