Summer Learning Journey - Wk 4 Day 4

  1. Hi Tiana,

It's Leslie here, reading your blog from my home in Canada as a member of the Summer Learning Journey team.

I agree with you that Countdown's decision to not give plastic bags to their customers is a good one. It shows that they care about the amount of plastic that is polluting our planet, and that they feel responsible for doing something about that.

Your word 'respectful' is a good one - Countdown in acting very respectfully and asking their customers to be respectful too. Good idea!

When I go grocery shopping I take reusable cloth bags and sometimes I even take my laundry baskets. They're so big that they're easy to load with groceries, and easy to unpack. The store clerks are used to my husband and I showing up with laundry baskets - they just smile and help us pack our groceries in them. It's great.

Do you use reusable bags when you shop? Is Countdown one of your favourite grocery stores?

I'm so glad that you've chosen to be part of the Summer Learning Journey program this summer. Good for you!!

I'll continue to enjoy reading your blog!!

    Cheers,

    Leslie

  2. Hi Tiana,

It's Leslie again, a member of the Summer Learning Journey team commenting on your blog posting about Machu Picchu.

I agree with you that it's important for the Peruvian government to protect this ancient site by limiting the number of tourists who can come to visit.

Are there any special places in New Zealand, that you know of, where tourism is limited?

Here in Canada we have many beautiful, nature parks and some of them are getting to be so busy that the native animals are starting to die back. Their environment is too crowded with people for them to cope. So we have had to change how we do things in our parks in order for the birds, animals and insects to thrive. Sometimes hiking trails are closed for a while, sometimes campsites are closed or moved to another location. We have to limit the number of visitors so the lakes and rivers aren't polluted by motor boats. There are many things we have to do in order to care for our natural areas.

I hope you're getting out to some parks and hiking areas this summer and that you're enjoying these SLJ activities. You're doing a good job!!!

    Cheers,

    Leslie

  3. Hi Tiana,

It's Leslie here reading your blog from far away Canada as a member of the Summer Learning Journey team.

You've done a great job of creating a slogan to go along with a campaign to protect seals. Well done!!!!

Have you ever seen a seal up close? I suspect you've been out to a beach, perhaps around Auckland, and watched them swim in the water or lie on the sand.

My daughter, Rachel, lives in Auckland and so I've had a chance to visit your beautiful city and to see seals along the shore. They're very strong animals, aren't they? And they deserve to have a clean and safe environment in which to live. I think you've chosen a good campaign focus!!

I hope you're having lots of fun in the outdoors this summer, as well as participating in the Summer Learning Journey program. I'll continue to enjoy reading your blog!!

    Cheers,

    Leslie

  4. Hi Tiana, Great job on completing this activity! Did you know that plastic is made from oil, which is mined from the seabed and if it spills then the sea animals and the birds that live nearby will get poisoned and die. I also agree, it is good to see that the government is doing their part to help save nature.
