I hope that you enjoyed watching the Whale Rider trailers and learning more about both Hector's dolphins and the beached whales at Farewell Spit last year. It must have been so difficult for the local residents to know what to do to help the whales. It certainly sounds like they really banded together and did their very best to save the whales.
It will be interesting to see what is done about saving the Hector's dolphin population in New Zealand. I'm not sure if they will ever fully ban fishing as there are people who are dependent on the fishing industry. They need to catch fish in order to sell them and make money to feed their families. It is a really complicated situation...
I hope that you will continue with the journey and enjoy all that is to come on Day #5. It's time to head farther south and explore some of the mountains and national parks in the south island!
